You may have noticed I’ve been trending towards post-rock music recently. For my next album, I’m hoping the sound is a lot more consistent, so I’ve been experimenting with using the same instruments to create different songs. So again, I bring you guitars, drums, piano and orchestral strings. How many people would be interested in a full-length album with stuff like this?

It’s been a busy week! I’m finishing up another soundtrack review, as well as some freelance work. It also looks like I might be getting some more exposure very soon! Woohoo!
Here’s a dark ambient song I’m working on. It’s filled with lots of creepy guitar effects, tuvan throat singing, and processed samples of ocean waves. I’m planning on ratcheting up the intensity over several minutes, to create the feel of a chase scene in a horror film, while keeping some of these drones in the background.
What does this music make you think of?
For this week’s song sketch, I experimented with creating a more typical “rock” sound, with an emphasis on synths and distortion. I even recorded some vocal stuff for it!
Here’s another song sketch. It’s got some ambient pads, synths, piano and vocal samples. Definitely going for a hypnotic feel with this one, but some of the instruments probably don’t blend as well as they could.
I started working on this song a few months ago, after watching the trailer for Tron: Legacy. I was really excited to hear that Daft Punk (a French electronic music duo) was going to do the soundtrack, so I decided to see if I could create something similar. Then the song sat on my computer, neglected and unfinished, until just last weekend. I finally went out to see Tron. Then I bought the soundtrack on the same day, came home and re-opened the project file. I was thinking of just including this song as another “preview of the week,” but then inspiration struck and I ended up finishing it!
As I mentioned, it’s heavily influenced by Daft Punk’s score, which combines electronic music with orchestral music. There are hints of some other late 90s techno in there (like The Crystal Method and Fluke), and I threw in some more really huge drums. You might even jump in your seat! ;-)
Anyway, thanks again for listening! I hope you enjoy it!
Here’s a rough “song sketch” I made a few months ago, using samples of an electric guitar being bowed like a cello instead of plucked. I think it’s got a really interesting mood.
Let’s start off the new year with a bang!
This new piece of music I’m working on starts out as a brooding, epic orchestral piece — giant drums, swelling strings and ominous horns — and then half-way through it kicks into high gear with some instrumental post-rock influences. It’s nearly finished, but I can’t tell you what it’s for just yet! Keep your eyes peeled for a follow-up on this song in the next couple of months.
